Traditional leaders and stakeholders in Ibadanland have issued a stern warning to the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, over what they described as repeated acts of disrespect toward the Olubadan stool and the Ibadan traditional institution.
The warning followed an incident at the Agodi Government House, Ibadan, where the Alaafin reportedly attempted to greet the Olubadan, Oba (Sen.) Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, by stretching out his hand while remaining seated. Ibadan stakeholders described the gesture as a grave insult to the Olubadan and the entire Ibadan traditional hierarchy.

In a statement signed by the President of Ibadan Mogajis, Mogaji Asimiyu Ariori, and the Coordinator of the Ibadan Compound Peace Initiative (ICPI), Mogaji Dr. Nurudeen Akinade, the act was condemned as “an embarrassment of the highest order.” They said the Olubadan’s reaction was appropriate and served as a warning.
The stakeholders cautioned that any further disrespect from the Alaafin would attract stronger responses from Ibadan’s traditional authorities, including monarchs, chiefs, Mogajis, and Baales. They stressed that Ibadanland would not tolerate actions capable of undermining its cultural values and traditional dignity.
Highlighting Oba Ladoja’s seniority and pedigree, the group noted that the Olubadan is an 82-year-old former governor, former senator, respected statesman, and accomplished businessman whose status must be accorded due respect.
They also called on Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to caution the Alaafin, warning that continued provocation could trigger widespread backlash from Ibadan people.
Reaffirming Ibadan’s historical independence, the statement concluded that Ibadanland has never been subordinate to the Alaafin of Oyo and would resist any attempt to portray it otherwise.
