The Federal Government has earmarked ₦7 billion for the solarisation of the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in the 2026 budget, even as nearly ₦2 billion has also been allocated for fueling and maintaining generators at the seat of power.
Details from the Budget Office of the Federation show that the ₦7 billion provision falls under State House expenditures and is described as the “provision of solarisation of the Villa with a solar mini-grid.”
This comes a year after a similar project attracted ₦10 billion in the 2025 fiscal year. In April 2025, the Presidency defended that allocation following widespread public criticism, describing the solar project as a strategic, long-term investment aimed at improving sustainability and energy efficiency at the State House.

Despite the push for renewable energy, the 2026 budget also includes a separate allocation of ₦1.989 billion for generator fuel at the State House Headquarters. The item is listed as “Plant and Generator fuel cost.”
In addition, ₦17.2 million has been set aside for generator maintenance during the same fiscal year.
Altogether, the State House is expected to spend approximately ₦2 billion on generator fueling and maintenance in 2026, alongside the ₦7 billion solar mini-grid project.
The dual allocations have sparked strong reactions from Nigerians, many of whom are questioning the rationale behind spending billions of naira on generator-powered electricity at Aso Rock, especially in light of repeated government assurances of improved national power supply and ongoing economic hardship across the country.
