Five governorship aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State have agreed to adopt a consensus approach in selecting the party’s flag-bearer, pledging to support whoever emerges through the process.
The decision was reached during a high-level meeting involving gubernatorial and National Assembly aspirants, alongside key stakeholders and party leaders. The meeting took place on Sunday at the Maitama, Abuja residence of party leader, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki.
Those in attendance included Prof. Ali Ahmad, Engr. Kale Kawu, Mr. Omar Bolaji Gambari, Alhaji Ladi Hassan, and Mr. Olaseni Ibiwoye (SAN), all of whom have declared interest in contesting for the governorship ticket.
In their separate remarks, the aspirants expressed their willingness to abide by the decision of the party leadership and work collectively for the eventual candidate.
They also committed to returning to Kwara State within 48 hours to brief their supporters on the outcome of the meeting, emphasizing the need for unity and cooperation in the interest of the party.
According to the aspirants, adopting a consensus arrangement would minimize internal conflicts, strengthen cohesion, and position the party as a united front ahead of the election campaign.
Responding to the development, Dr. Saraki commended the aspirants for their show of maturity and commitment to party unity. However, he cautioned that such agreements have, in the past, been undermined when outcomes do not favor all parties involved. He assured that further consultations would be held with stakeholders to arrive at a broadly acceptable and credible decision.
The meeting was also attended by notable party figures, including former National Chairman, Alhaji Kawu Baraje; National Legal Adviser, Mr. Kamal Ajibade (SAN); Kwara State PDP Chairman, Hon. Adamu Isa Bawa; State Secretary, Mr. Abdulrahman Abdullahi Kayode; and State Legal Adviser, Barrister Monsurat Peace.
Others present were senatorial and House of Representatives aspirants, as well as Board of Trustees members from Kwara State, Alhaji Balogun Ishola Fulani and Alhaji Nimota Ibrahim.
The gathering marks a significant step in the party’s efforts to consolidate internal unity ahead of the governorship race.
