Mallam Abdulrahman Aliagan has been re-elected President of the Nigerian Guild of Investigative Journalists (NGIJ), while Oyelola Oyewale emerged as Vice President, Information and Administration, following the guild’s 2026 executive election held virtually on Wednesday, September 30.
Aliagan, the Group Managing Editor of Time Nigeria Magazine, polled 24 votes to narrowly defeat his challenger, Bolaji Israel, who secured 23 votes in a closely fought contest.
The result marks Aliagan’s return for another term at the helm of the professional body, while Oyewale’s emergence as Vice President, Information and Administration places him among the principal officers of the guild’s new executive council.
Announcing the results from Lagos, Chairman of the 2026 NGIJ Electoral Committee, Mr. Lateef Owodunni, said a total of 47 eligible voters were accredited to participate in the election.
Other officers elected into the new executive include Comrade James Ezema, Vice President, Investigation; Rowland Shuwa, General Secretary; and Kehinde Adeleye, Public Relations Officer.
The newly elected executive is expected to oversee the affairs of the guild and advance its commitment to professional standards, credible investigative journalism and responsible journalism practice in Nigeria.
The election also underscores the guild’s continued effort to strengthen its leadership structure and promote accountability and professionalism within the investigative journalism community.
