Hon. Mashood Mustapha (MM), a prominent Kwara-born politician and the Wakilin of Ilorin Emirate, appeared before the Kwara State High Court today, June 30, 2025, to answer to a defamation suit filed against him and his brother, Bolakale Mustapha, by the Governor of Kwara State, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
The case stems from a video released by MM following the demolition of his property, Crystal Place, by the Kwara State Government in October 2024. In the video, MM, as he is fondly called, alleged that the demolition was politically motivated, claiming it was part of a broader plan to ruin his investments due to his political differences with the Governor.
Represented in court by a formidable legal team led by Prof. Kayode Olatoke, SAN, Hon. MM’s defence also included other legal heavyweights: Mr. Emeka Etiaba, SAN; Mr. Jimoh Adebimpe Abdulmumini, SAN; Mr. George Ibrahim, SAN; Mr. Lanre Abdul, Esq; and Mr. Sadiq Abdulbaki, Esq.
Bolakale Mustapha, who was charged for uploading the video in question, was separately represented by Mr. Moses Ebute, SAN; Mr. Tafa Ahmed, Esq; and Mr. David James, Esq.
The background of the suit dates back to October 6, 2024, when Crystal Place, a major commercial hub in Ilorin owned by MM, was abruptly demolished by the state government after issuing a three-hour quit notice to its tenants. The property, allegedly developed with full government approvals, was razed, prompting MM’s emotional response online.
Following arguments from both parties in court, Justice M. Abdulgafar granted the defendants bail of ₦5 million, with one surety. Both Mashood Mustapha and Bolakale Mustapha were reported to have met their bail conditions and left the court premises without incident.
The case has been adjourned to July 18, 2025, for further proceedings.
