A former Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Dr. Is’haq Modibbo Kawu, hosted members of the Association of Kwara Online Media Practitioners (ASKOMP) to Iftar at his Ilorin residence on Monday.
During his interaction with members of ASKOMP, Dr. Modibbo Kawu encouraged young media practitioners to uphold the integrity of the media. He warned against practices that undermine the credibility of the profession, such as media houses giving awards to politicians without merit. The ace broadcaster believes that this practice erodes public trust in journalism and weakens the integrity of the media.
Kawu spoke on the need to recognize and give awards to professionals who have made a mark in society, citing the case of the doctor who helps raped women in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He also stressed the importance of promoting ethical journalism, protecting freedom of expression, and prioritizing truth, objectivity, and fairness in reporting.
He also emphasized the need for continuous training and capacity building for journalists to maintain credibility and adapt to the evolving media landscape.
Dr. Modibbo Kawu’s insightful interaction with members of ASKOMP provided an opportunity for discussions on the challenges facing journalism and possible solutions to strengthening the profession.
In his remarks, the Chairman of ASKOMP, Salihu Shola Taofeeq, appreciated Dr. Kawu’s dedication to the media industry and his consistent support for journalists.
