The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released a revised timetable for the 2027 General Elections, shifting key election dates and campaign schedules following the enactment of the Electoral Act, 2026.
New Election Dates:
- Presidential & National Assembly: Saturday, 16 January 2027
- Governorship & State Assembly: Saturday, 6 February 2027
These replace the earlier February–March 2027 dates.
Updated Political Timelines
- Party primaries: 23 April – 30 May 2026
- Presidential & NASS campaigns begin: 19 August 2026
- Governorship & State Assembly campaigns begin: 9 September 2026
- Campaigns end 24 hours before election day
INEC says it will strictly enforce compliance.
Osun Governorship Election Moved
Osun State governorship poll has been shifted from 8 August to 15 August 2026.
Remaining activities for Osun and Ekiti will now follow the Electoral Act, 2026.
Why This Matters
INEC says the changes ensure full compliance with the law and align with the 1999 Constitution (as amended), as it calls on political parties and voters to support peaceful and credible elections.
With the revised calendar now in place, political parties, candidates, and voters are expected to adjust their preparations as Nigeria moves into another election cycle under an amended law.
