A moment involving the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba (Sen.) Rashidi Ladoja, drew public attention on Monday at the 2026 Inter-Faith Service held at the Secretariat’s Grand Space, behind the Oyo State House of Assembly, Ibadan.
During the event, the Alaafin, who was seated, appeared to extend a hand of greeting towards the Olubadan. However, the gesture was not reciprocated, as Oba Ladoja proceeded to exchange pleasantries with other traditional rulers present.
The Olubadan later greeted Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and other dignitaries before taking his seat. The incident was observed by several attendees at the gathering.
Following the event, the moment sparked discussions among the public, with varying opinions expressed on issues of traditional protocol, hierarchy, and the expected conduct of royal institutions at official functions.
While some observers expressed excitement over the development, others urged caution, noting that long-established customs and traditions should be properly understood before drawing conclusions.
