Once again, Hon. Mashood Mustapha (MM), the Wakilin of Ilorin Emirate, has demonstrated why many regard him as “the man of the people.”
The atmosphere at the Alanamu Ward Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was electrifying yesterday as supporters, party faithful, and political associates gathered in large numbers to welcome the prominent politician back into the party. It was more than a political event; it was a reunion marked by excitement, hope, and renewed confidence in the future of Kwara politics.
As Hon. MM made his grand entrance into the PDP fold, jubilant chants filled the streets, reflecting the deep connection he enjoys with the grassroots. For many observers, his return signals a major turning point ahead of the 2027 general elections.
With Hon. Mashood Mustapha now back in the PDP, many Kwarans believe the hope for a better and more inclusive Kwara has been rekindled. His return is widely seen as a strategic boost to the party’s structure and ongoing efforts under the leadership of the distinguished Senator Dr. Bukola Saraki to reposition the PDP for victory in 2027.
Interestingly, Hon. MM himself described the move as not just a defection, but “a perfect homecoming.”
Speaking during the historic gathering, the political bigwig stated, “This is not an unfamiliar territory for me. I was an active member of the PDP from 2003 to 2014 before we moved to the APC. Today, I do not see this as a defection, but as a homecoming.”
His remarks resonated deeply with party supporters who view him as one of the most influential political figures in the state.
More importantly, Hon. MM made it clear that his return was not driven by personal ambition or internal supremacy battles. Rather, he emphasized unity, collaboration, and collective responsibility toward rescuing Kwara State and ensuring quality leadership at every level.
He said, “I did not join the PDP to displace anyone, especially those who have held the fort over the years. I am here to work together with other stakeholders to ensure that Kwarans get the leaders they truly deserve – from the Governor to the Senate, House of Representatives, and the State House of Assembly.”
He further revealed that his relationship with the PDP leadership had remained cordial and strategic over the past two years, noting that extensive consultations and behind-the-scenes engagements had been ongoing long before his official return.
“Over the past two years, I have maintained a cordial and strategic relationship with the leadership of the PDP. Together, we have engaged in thoughtful planning and deliberate efforts to reposition Kwara State for greatness. I am confident to say that we are closer to success than many realize.”
Indeed, those familiar with Kwara’s political terrain understand the significance of Hon. MM’s political influence and strategic value. When it comes to grassroots mobilization, political calculations, and electoral strategy, Hon. Mashood Mustapha has consistently proven himself to be a force to reckon with.
Many political analysts still acknowledge the crucial role he played in the historic “Otoge” movement that reshaped Kwara politics in 2019. His organizational strength, political network, and grassroots appeal contributed immensely to that victory.
Ironically, the same structure he helped build was later turned against him. Yet, as the saying goes, ‘time heals all wounds’.

One of the defining moments of yesterday’s event was Hon. MM’s deep reflection on his longstanding political relationship with Dr. Bukola Saraki. He paid glowing tribute to the former Senate President, describing him as a statesman with enduring commitment to the growth and stability of Kwara State.
He also urged party members and supporters to remain united and committed to the collective mission of returning power to the people through the PDP.
Without doubt, Hon. MM’s return to the PDP marks a watershed in Kwara’s political history.
His widespread acceptance across political and social divides, combined with the PDP’s position as the most formidable opposition platform in the state, has significantly altered the political equation ahead of 2027.
For many residents, this development is not merely about political realignment; it is the beginning of an era with the possibility of having a government that truly reflects the aspirations of the people.
As the countdown to 2027 gradually begins, one thing is becoming increasingly clear – the political landscape in Kwara State will change for good.
